Its distinguishing feature is a flattened paddle tip rather than the round profile of a standard cannula, letting it glide easily through the subcutaneous plane. Surgeons use it to release the mandibular ligament and refine the jawline while avoiding surface irregularities, and its scraping motion helps feather the treated area for a smooth transition into untreated tissue during submental liposculpture.
Because the tip is blunt and flat, dissection stays superficial to structures such as the marginal mandibular nerve, which sit just beneath the platysma. This makes the instrument well suited to hydrodissection and tumescent fluid distribution during the pre-tunnelling stage of a facelift. The single upward-facing port lets the surgeon aspirate fluid and small fat deposits while the paddle tip simultaneously dissects, cutting down on instrument exchanges during time-sensitive local anesthesia cases. Because tissue is separated rather than torn, patients typically see reduced swelling and faster skin retraction than with sharp dissection alone.
The cannula also works well for preparing recipient sites in fat grafting, creating a clean pocket without thermal damage to support graft survival, and it fits standard Luer lock syringes and handle systems. For facial work, a 2.5mm or 3.0mm tip on a Luer lock hub at 15cm length is the typical configuration, offering the tactile feedback and rigidity needed on fine structures without tip deflection.
Each cannula is machined from German-grade 304 stainless steel with a hand-polished tip for smooth tissue glide, and is fully autoclavable for repeated surgical use.
EB MED CO supplies the Spatula Liposuction Cannula to hospitals and surgical clinics across Canada.
