What a Laminectomy Involves

Laminectomy relieves pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots caused by stenosis, disc herniation, tumours, or bone spurs by removing part or all of the vertebral lamina, the bony arch covering the spinal canal. After a midline incision and careful dissection of the paraspinal muscles, the surgeon works through the lamina and related structures, such as the ligamentum flavum and hypertrophic facets, using a sequence of cutting, biting, scraping, and elevating steps to open the canal safely around sensitive neural tissue.
